Old Market is definitely a challenge to find if you're from out of town. Having said that, they had a very fine selection. The Bombay IPA and Ratdog ESB were very good. They had Great White wheat, and a wit, and Terminal Gravity IPA as guest tap (a disappointment). The chips were somewhat stale. Easy to get back on I-5, not so easy to access off (there's no exit).

Overall, this is quite a grand pub. The beers are many, and a few are fine examples of their stylesOverall, this is quite a grand pub. The beers are many, and a few are fine examples of their styles. This is the place to have a few jars when the wife is shopping at nearby Washington Square.
For an in-depth accounting of these and other Portland beers please visit my beer blog at http://pdxwriter.blogstream.com/. . I consider it my neighborhood pub

An update to the review immediately below, now that I've visited once a week for months. It can have its off nights. Last visit my fries were cold, and the IPA so gone flat they shouldn't have been serving (but waiter quickly replaced with a Hop On! -- yum). My only 3 consistent gripes here are (1) vegetarians get soaked price-wise. For example, vegetarian gyros (grilled onions, mushrooms and peppers) cost $8.50, just like the meat version, and that doesn't even include fries. Ridiculous! (2) Fries cost $1.50 extra with burgers/sandwiches, and then the portion is quite small. Order chicken fingers on the other hand, they come wih enough fries to feed your family. (3) Would be nice to see a new seasonal a litle more often. So there you have it--I still love the place, and will continue my weekly visits.

I just moved to Tigard from Indiana and geez am I lucky to have the Market Pub about a mile from my house. If this BP were anywhere other than the Portland area, it would have to be ranked as awesome across the board. I don't know what the guy below means who says it didn't look clean--try comparing it to Lucky Labrador (which I love and am NOT knocking.) I love everything about the Market, and think their beers blow away many, many others--McMenamin's, to give one example. If you're visiting Portland and made a special trip out from downtown to check it out, you might not think that was worth it. But if you take surface streets it is only a few minutes away from the zoo, Rose Garden, etc. so you might think about it. Again, what a neighborhood treasure.

All I kept thinking while I was here was "God, this would be a great place to spend Sundays during football season!" A huge variety of taps to please anyone (even bud, PBR,coors) along with other local brews, and of course their own. The Pacific Porter wasn't that great. Hop On was really good.

A very different type of brewpub, this place indeed truly was an old marketplace, only the isles of shelves were replaced by nice wooden benches and tables. There were also a couple of pool tables on the far end. Not the cleanest looking place, but seemed to be popular with families as there were a bunch of children. Overall, I’d give this place an average rating, as the food and beer were mediocre. 12/14/03 7pm

two words just two words HOP ON!!! this ale had to be over 110 ibu, and good lord did it have flavor!! all their beers were exceptional (regular pale, black magic stout and ipa), and they had a very large tap selection. food portions were also very large. a must stop when in portland. plus dogs are allowed on the patio!!

We have gone to the Old Market as a couple, as parents with two small children and with a large group of friends over the last four years and are regular, if not, frequent visitors. If we lived closer, we'd be there more often. The beer is consistently pretty good. I've had great food here and food that is what you would expect from a pub. The place can be loud and the service a bit slow, but the folks are consistently nice, laid back and happy to serve families. Their patience and accomodating attitude pulls the service rating up to good. Reviewers tend to rave about every pub, which makes the ratings meaningless, so to fight that trend I've tried to be judicious. Nonetheless, this is a tremendous local pub, with a wonderful variety of beer and a comfortable atmosphere. I look forward to going here and I make the decision after considering the many other great pubs in Portland.

The owners took the time to check on us and ask our opinions. Staff was great, food was great. Like the artwork and the openess of the building. That Shelly is a hot one!
